Hou Gu Huang Shan Mao Feng via sweetesdew

I know it’s a bit late for this but I wanted to share with you some more of the goodies I brought back home from my trip to China last year! This is a Hou Gu Mao Feng from @sweetestdew, and was part of the Mao Feng primo sampler which I purchased from Dylon last May when I visited Anhui. Dylon is teaching English in Anhui while pursuing tea hunting as a main/side business 😁 it was great to share perspectives on tea in a few sessions we had together last year! I guess it’s just a matter of weeks until Dylon will release some 2020 samplers. Even though this tea was now a year old it still was quite enjoyable!

Hou Gu Mao Feng 2019: The liquid of the first infusions gives a warm comforting smell, a bit like chocolate and artichokes, a very warm comforting smell; actually reminds of this raw chocolate I am having often these days. The first infusion is very light, quite pale in color, but it’s a rather thick velvety liquid which spreads really nicely on the tongue. This clean sweetness combined with the texture reminds me a bit of Yin Zhen, but with a very different taste.

The second infusion also adds a bit of a fruity flavour and sticky aftertaste, something which faintly reminds me of melon. So despite the age this green tea still is clean and fragrant! As far as I remember this tea was also one of my favorites earlier this year when I tasted all three Huang Shan Mao Fengs in the Primo sampler sourced by @sweetestdew!

After the first infusions I used hotter and hotter water, till almost boiling! The infusions stayed very clean and sweet without the typical green tea flavour, there were more warm flavours in it, reminding me of whites chocolate 😁 all in all a really enjoyable tea! I think Mao Feng, being one of the few non-rolled green teas, is probably also enjoyable for those people who normally defy bolder, ”greener“ green teas 😉 what do you think?

I hope that this years harvest will be as good or even better! Dylan @sweetestdew will probably soon resume his Mao Feng Monday’s, regularly sourcing tea in Huang Shan!
